Welcome to the Butterfly Class Blog!

This is the page that you can visit to keep updated on the children's learning. Make sure you come back each week to see the learning opportunities that the children have been taking part in.

Spring Week 11

It has been another busy week in Butterfly Class, between the Mother's Day Market, the sensation owl visit and our usual hard work we have barely had a chance to catch out breath.

In geography we spent some time looking at the human geography of Spain and its climate. In English we have been busy getting to the bottom of a crime to write our newspapers on. In art we have still been working hard on our sculptures. In maths we got to do a talking maths lesson, which allows us to stay on our feet whilst talking through our mathematical thinking. Overall a super jampacked week!

Congratulations to Thyri for getting the Headteachers Award this week!

Spring Week 10

On Friday, we had a special visit from STEM ambassador Claire who set off Butterfly Class on a challenge. We had one hour to create a fairground ride out of K'NEX. Time was tight but we pulled it off and created some of the best fairground rides out of K'NEX that you will of ever seen! We had great fun doing this challenge and we are very thankful to Claire for helping us. A massive well done to Harry and Philip who actually ended up being our class winners!!!

Congratulations to Thea for getting the Headteachers Award this week!

Spring Week 9

This week is British Science week which means our science lesson this week was a little different. We wee challenged with coming up with our own animals that had different adaptations that mean it could survive it its chosen habitat. Some of us used parts of animals that already existed to help and some of us chose the adaptations we wanted and then meshed them together. We were only allowed to use glue and recycled paper. It was a tough challenge but we managed to create some amazing weird and wacky animals.

In art we have been exploring the artist Henry Moore and have began creating our own sculptures inspired by his work. We started off with newspaper and parcel tape. We are now in the process of paper macheing them to ensure they are solid are less likely to fall apart.

To end the week we worked on some team building skills in PE. The mission was to get across one side of the hall to the other using just 4 hoops. It sounds easy but when there's 7 of you and not all the hoops are big and if you touch the floor outside the hoop you have to restart, it suddenly seems a lot harder. Fortunately for Butterfly Class, we persisted and managed to get there and back after a few mishaps (which resulted in restarts) along the way.

Congratulations to Isla for getting the Headteachers Award this week!

Spring Week 8

Well, what a busy week we've had indeed. Between FAB science coming in, World Book Day and some science experiments of our own, we've barely had the chance to catch our breath.

On Tuesday, we were fortunate enough to have FAB science in to show us some amazing experiments. We sat in awe, having our minds blown time and time again.

On Thursday, we conducted an experiment of our own. In science we are looking at sound and this week we looked a little deeper at how sound travels. We got out some tin cans and string to create some tin phones and then the magic happened. We could not believe that it worked so we even went to the extreme of going out onto the field to test it on an even larger scale. You would not have believed the shock on our faces when it did!

We finished the week with World Book Day. We spent the day creating persuasive letters based on the story "The day the crayons quit". In Butterfly Class, our carpet quit. We had to rush off to the practical room to find a way to win back the carpet and make things right. We spent time thinking about how the carpet might be feeling and why. Then, we had a debate where half of us represented the carpet and the other half represented the class. Finally, we used the ideas from our debate to create a persuasive letter either from the carpet or the class. Really well done to Harry and Sophia who shared their letters in our whole school assembly.

Congratulations to Jessica for getting the Headteachers Award this week!

Spring Week 7

This week in we have been looking at fractions in maths. We absolutely nailed it when it came to understanding the whole and how many equal parts a fraction had been split in to.

In science this half term we are exploring sound. We started off our topic by exploring how sound is made. We then investigated this by using some drums, rice, water and tuning forks. It was fascinating to see how the water reacted to the tuning fork and watching the rice dance around on the drums.

A really special mention this week to the amazing children who completed the half term project. There has been some brilliant pieces of work created and I am very proud of each of you.

Congratulations to Martim for getting the Headteachers Award this week!

Spring Week 6

This week in Butterfly class we have been building structures in DT. Our aim was to build a structure that can withstand flooding. Once we finished making them we tried to simulate a sudden flood for some of our structures to see if they met the brief. We had a great time building them even if we did make a massive mess.

Congratulations to Sammy for getting the Headteachers Award this week!

Spring Week 5

This week in RE we have been looking at some key figures in history and how religion/belief contributed to what they did. We focused on Martin Luther King Jr., Mother Theresa and Mahatma Gandhi. We researched what impact they had on society and even had conversations about the civil rights movement and the British Empire. It was an extremely informative and thought provoking lesson.

Congratulations to Riley for getting the Headteachers Award this Week!

Spring Week 4

This week in English we have been writing playscripts loosely based on our class book 'Kensuke's Kingdom'. We used the theme of waking up on a dessert island and then let our imaginations run wild.

Congratulations to Lacey for getting the Headteachers Award this week!

Spring Week 3

This week in Science we have been looking at soil formation. We delved in to the different layers of soil and the ways it is formed. We followed this up with an experiment where we got managed to see in real life the different layers of soil. We all had a beaker with some soil in and filled it with water. We gave it a mix and waited for the magic to happen. Over time when the soil began to settle, it split into the different layers of soil. In PE we learnt a new ball game that we can hopefully teach to some of the younger years at lunch times.

Congratulations to Almira for getting the Headteachers Award this week!

Spring Week 2

This week in English, Butterfly Class has been writing poetry based on a chapter from the book we are reading in class 'Kensuke's Kingdom'. It was based on the moment where Michael falls off of his boat and into the ocean. We focused on making sure we got the mood across to the reader, using personification to help us along the way. On Thursday in Geography, we looked at how volcanoes are made and rounded off the afternoon by investigating the different properties of rocks. We rounded off the week with PE and we carried on with our spy dance. We went over what we had already done and then added in some tense action to help build our dance about the spy.

Spring Week 1

Welcome back to spring term! What a busy first week we've had indeed. We have started looking at Kensuke's Kingdom in English and we are eager to keep on reading. In Geography we have started looking at 'our extreme earth' and started looking at the different layers of the earth. In science we have started looking at rocks. We discussed different rock types and then tried to sort a variety of rocks into different groups. We rounded off the week with a bit of dance in the PE. Safe to say we have worked our socks and are very well deserving of the weekend.

Autumn Week 15

After a long 15 weeks we have finally reached the end of the autumn term. I hope you all enjoy a well deserved break and have a very Merry Christmas & a happy New Year.

Congratulations to Oscar for getting the Headteachers Award this week!

Autumn Week 14

In DT we finally got to make our nightlights! After spending time perfecting our designs we finally got round to making them. A lot of hard work and effort went into making them and the finished products looked great. This week was our last PE session with Kate. Definitely feeling a lot of mixed emotions as it was a super fun last PE lesson but also a sad time knowing that it was the last. Butterfly Class would like to say a huge thanks to Kate for all her hard work and help in PE.

Autumn Week 13

In English, Butterfly class has been looking at persuasive writing. We found ourselves with the opportunity to do something amazing..... writing to Santa Clause to persuade him to send over one of his very finest elves to keep an eye on us! We worked together to create a letter that no one could refuse, not even the big guy himself. Stay tuned to find out the response we get. In PE we have been carrying on with our gymnastics, focusing on types of jumps and the technique we need to jump off of a range of apparatus. It has been another busy week and we have made it to the end.

Congratulations to Rohin for getting the Headteachers Award this week!

Autumn Week 12

This week in DT, Butterfly Class began designing their night lights. We had to think really hard about what we were going to make them out of and how our circuits were going to fit inside of them. In English, we have been looking at writing descriptions for different settings. Our creativity was flowing and we managed to write some incredible descriptions. We have kicked off the festive season a little early by beginning to practice our songs for the Christmas Concert. Already, we are sounding better and better each day.

Congratulations to Arnie for getting the Headteachers Award this week!

Autumn Week 11

This week in Butterfly class we have worked hard and gotten lots done. In science we looked at the water cycle, in maths we continued to work little and often on our times-tables and in English we mastered writing a set of instructions on how to capture a wild mythical two-headed beast. We rounded off the week with some talking maths. We get to walk around the classroom discussing our thought process whilst answering the questions in our book. It's our favourite way to keep us moving and keep us learning.

Congratulations to Sienna for getting the Headteachers Award this week!

Autumn Week 10

This week in Butterfly class we began gymnastics in PE. We tried a range of partner balances with a variety of difficulty. We had a good laugh whilst trying to master them. In English we have began to look at instructions, more specifically, how to catch a mythical beast. If you see any of us with a giant net don't be alarmed this is to help us better understand how to catch them.

Congratulations to Ella for getting the Headteachers Award this week!

Autumn Week 9

After our well deserved short break, Butterfly Class sprang straight back into action, busy working hard and learning new things. We got the glockenspiels out and music and had a great time. In DT we dismantled flashlights to get our heads around how they worked

Congratulations to Harry for getting the Headteachers Award this week!

Autumn Week 8

It is safe to stay after a long 8 weeks we have finally made it to the end of the first half term. Butterfly Class have had an amazing start to the year and put 100% into everything they have done. Have a lovely half term!

Congratulations to Ethan for getting the Headteachers Award this week!

Autumn Week 7

It has been another busy week here in Butterfly Class. We have worked hard on a variety of subjects. Some highlights of the week are:

  • Carrying out our own science investigations that we planned last week.
  • Blowing off some steam whilst continuing to improve our tag rugby skills with Kate, in PE.
  • Reenacting a story about the Crucifixion to help us understand what it is truly about for Christians.

We rounded off the week with a timestables afternoon to ensure our recall of them is top notch. Overall a busy week where we have all worked extremely hard.

Congratulations to Izzy for getting the Headteachers Award this week!

Autumn Week 6

This week, Butterfly Class had a special guest. Declan Brooks, Team GB Bronze Olympic medalist in BMX came and gave Roseacres a visit. After wowing the whole school with an array of tricks he came into our class to show us his medal and answer some questions. It was a very cool experience that we all loved!

Congratulations to James and Sophia for getting the Headteachers Award this week!

Autumn Week 5

This Friday, Butterfly Class were fortunate enough to go and experience the Benedetti Session at Saffron Hall. We had a great morning, getting to partake in many musical games that had us thinking about rhythm and call & answer. We were introduced to the cajon drum and vibraphone and got to hear them in action. It was an amazing experience that we all enjoyed very much.

In science, we continued to look at electricity, trying to make a variety of switches to go in our circuits. We had a lot of success and enjoyed investigating the different ways to make switches.

Autumn Week 4

In topic this term, Butterfly Class is looking at the Anglo Saxons and Vikings. In history, we were fortunate enough to use some artifacts from them time to extend our thinking and questioning skills. We spent the lesson looking at them and thinking about what they might have been used for and what we thought they might have been called.

In English we honed in on our feelings and tried our best to channel our inner actor to recreate scenes from the short film we have been focusing on called 'The Present'. There were some very convincing dogs in our class.

Congratulations to Eloise for getting the Headteachers Award this week!

Autumn Week 3

This week Butterfly class continued to show their creativity in art, building on their compass skills to create the beginnings of a whole class art piece. In P.E we practiced both our attacking and defending skills in Tag Rugby, playing a whole host of different games to put the skills into action.

Congratulations to Olivia for getting the Headteachers Award this week!

Autumn Week 2

This week Butterfly class has been busy working hard, putting maximum effort into everything they do.

We had our first PE lesson with the Cricket Coach and we all had lots of fun practicing our batting skills. We finished the week with some art, honing in on our compass skills to create perfect circles.

Congratulations to Emine for getting the Headteachers Award this week!

Autumn Week 1

Welcome back and welcome to butterfly class!

This week we have been getting back into the swing of things and working hard.

In science this half term our topic is electricity and on Friday we were sorting objects into 'need to be plugged in' and 'needs batteries'. This gave the opportunity for some interesting conversations to be had about some items.

Congratulations to Jaxon for getting the Headteachers Award this week!
