Owl Visit

Congratulations to Phyllis for achieving the headteacher's award for being an excellent role model in Year 6.

We are excited to share with you the fabulous visit we had today from Erika and Oliva and their four magnificent owls: Dottie, Murph, Mango and Tango. The children had the opportunity to learn about the unique features of owls, including their large eyes, rotating neck, impressive wing span and sharp claws during a delightful assembly.
Following this educational assembly, there was a thrilling flying display where six Year 6 children assisted the owls in their flights, with each owl soaring over their heads. It was an unforgettable experience! In addition to the excitement of the flying demonstration, an important message about littering and environmental conservation was imparted, reminding us all of the significance of protecting the habitats of these incredible creatures. To top it off, each class had the chance to have their photo taken with Dottie the Barn Owl.
Sophia- I love when they flew over our heads!
Emily - It was a very cool experience!
Kaitlyn - It was a once in a lifetime opportunity to have an owl on my shoulder.
James - It was really fun when the owl flew onto my arm!
Phyllis - The marvelous sight shocked me!
Ruby - Erika and Oliva were super good with the owls and they made sure everyone got a chance to have the owls fly over us.

A huge congratulations to Ruby for achieving the headteacher's award this week!

The children worked exceptionally hard this week with our final SATs practice! Well done everyone!

A huge congratulations to Kaitlyn for achieving the headteacher's award this week!

I wanted to share some exciting news about our recent celebration of Book Day. This year, we focused on the delightful book The Day The Crayons Quit by Drew Daywalt, which encourages us to see things from different perspectives.

In a fun twist, each class chose a piece of stationery that had ‘quit’ due to being mistreated. In our class, the purple polishers took centre stage after encountering some issues with Falcon Class. This activity allowed our students to express their feelings while honing their writing and speaking skills.

Our mission was to write persuasive texts to convince the whole school to recognise the purple polishers’ plight. Then, the students delivered their speeches to their peers, showcasing their confidence and creativity during the presentations.

We believe these activities nurture a love of reading and also build important skills like communication and teamwork. We encourage you to talk to your child about their experiences on Book Day and explore more literary themes together at home.

If you have any questions or would like to chat about your child's progress, feel free to get in touch. Thank you for your continued support of our school and everything we do!

Spring Week 1

Congratulations to Freya for receiving the headteacher's award for an amazing first week at Roseacres.

I am writing to share some exciting news regarding the recent visit of seven Year 6 children from our school to Leventhorpe Secondary School for the Leventhorpe Book Awards. This event was a celebration of their enthusiasm for reading, and it provided an excellent opportunity for cross-collaboration with peers from a variety of primary schools.
During this visit, our children engaged in a thrilling activity as they transformed into codebreakers, deciphering pictures and clues to uncover the titles of six top secret books. This interactive experience not only sparked their curiosity but also encouraged teamwork and critical thinking skills. Over the next few weeks, the children will be reading these six books together and will prepare reviews to articulate their thoughts on each book selection.
Following the completion of the reading process, the children will reconvene to cast their votes for the book that they believe deserves the prestigious Leventhorpe Book Award. This initiative is designed not only to promote literacy but also to nurture a lifelong love for reading.
On the day of the event, it was heartening to witness the enthusiasm displayed by our students. Here are a few quotes that encapsulate their experiences:
  • Emily shared her excitement, stating, "I can't wait to get home and read my new book."
  • Amelia remarked, "This is so inspiring!"
  • Porter expressed his love for thrillers, saying, "The cover is mysterious and pulls me in as a reader."
  • Maya was particularly impressed with the surroundings, commenting, "This library is amazing! It's so big and colourful."
We believe that such experiences are invaluable in fostering a culture of reading within our school community. As parents and carers, your encouragement at home can further support your child's literary journey. We recommend setting aside time for reading together and discussing the books they encounter. Such engagement not only enriches comprehension but also strengthens familial bonds through the shared experience of literature.

Spring Week 5

A huge congratulations to Max for being awarded the headteacher's award for his contagious enthusiasm for learning (which has had us all inspired).

During our Celebration assembly Year 6 shared photos and a performance of one of our O2 songs 'Get Loud'. This was a wonderful experience and opportunity for us to share some of the magic of Year 6. Earlier in the week, Max created his own original song about the 02. He used lyrics from all of the songs we learnt for our Young Voices Choir and created his own magical performance. As a class, we learnt his song and supported his performance in front of the whole school! There was not a dry eye in the assembly hall - Roseacres are very proud of you Max!

Spring Week 4

A huge congratulations to Ruby for achieving the Headteacher's award for her fabulous attitude to learning and her commitment to improving her confidence in maths.

This week, Year 6 attended the 02 for their Young Voices. This was an opportunity to become part of the world's largest child choir! Here are some of the comments from the class:

Phyllis: It was magical and an once in a lifetime experience!

Arry: One of the best atmospheres I have ever seen!

Max: The 02 was one of a ride - I wish I could go back!

Ruby: It was such an amazing atmosphere!

Emily: It was a one in a life time experience - I would love to go back!

Francesca: It was magical to go with the class.

Spring Week 3

A huge congratulations Maya for receiving the Headteacher's award for her excellent vocabulary choices in our Spine Poetry.

We are enjoying learning the rules and positions of netball and we had a great game on Friday afternoon.  In science, we were exploring the journey of light using torches and mirrors.

Spring Week 2

A huge congratulations to Frankie for winning the Headteacher's award for his fabulous attitude to learning! This week we have continued to explore spine poetry. Year 6 have been collecting vocabulary which they used to create their own spine poetry of a mythical beast. In Maths, we have been exploring fractions - focusing on multiplying and dividing by integers.

In science, we have been exploring our eyes and how we see. We did this by drawing cross-section of the human eye and exploring how each component of the eye work together.

In PE, we have been exploring our new dance unit with our sports coaches.

A huge congratulations to our Swimming Gala Contestants - 1st Place in Year 5/6 Category.

Autumn Week 11

A huge congratulations to Year 6 Falcon for their wonderful performance during our KS2 Christmas Concert. I would like to give a special shoutout to Phyllis for her beautiful piano recital of Santa Baby and our House and Deputy House captains (Sophia and Romeo) for their special role of narrating our concert.

Congratulations to James for receiving the Headteacher's award this week; for being a wonderful role model in Year 6.

I hope everyone has a wonderful Christmas and a very Happy New Year!

Autumn Week 10

This week we have been busy rehearsing for our Christmas Concert! The children did an amazing job with their dress rehearsal today and are eager to share their performances on Monday Night!

In English, we have been finishing our newspaper report unit. On Friday, we turned our classroom into a newsroom and the class were busy typing up their reports on a recent crime. All the children really enjoyed this activity. We also had a visit from two previous Year 6's who came into school to do a Q&A for both Year 6 Classes. The children were able to ask any questions about the transition from Year 6 to Secondary school. This was an amazing opportunity, which put the children's minds at ease and gave them an opportunity to see all the good that secondary schools have to offer.

Autumn Week 9

A huge congratulations to Francesca for achieving the headteacher's award this week; an award given to celebrate her perseverance with fractions this week!

In science, we have been conducting our heart rate experiment. We did this by investigating the impact of exercise on our heart rates. In RE, we have been looking at peace and conflict within different religions; we achieved this by creating our own thought tunnels.

Autumn Week 8

A huge congratulations to Danylo for achieving the headteacher's award this week; an award given to celebrate his hard-working attitude.

In science the children started to plan an investigation into heart rate. We achieved this by working in groups and creating their own hypothesis on how exercise impacts our heart rate (investigation to follow on Friday). In maths, we are learning to add and subtract fractions and in English we have been writing a newspaper report.  In history we have been looking at the poem Dulce et Decorum est.

Autumn Week 7

Back to school after a lovely half term break.  Well done to those who entered the Pumpkin drawing competition.  On Tuesday we put our sewing skills to work and made poppies to wear for Remembrance of all soldiers who have died in conflicts since WW1.

We have started fractions in Maths and we're studying the War poem 'Flander's Field' in English.

Well done to James who received the Head Teacher's award for her hard work, fabulous attitude and great sewing skills this week.

Autumn Week 6

What an exciting week! On Wednesday, the children met an Olympic BMX athlete who won bonze in the Tokyo Olympics in 2020. He demonstrated a range of tricks including jumping over Mrs Hards! Each year group was given the opportunity to hold his Olympic Medal and ask him questions during our Q+A session. This presentation was all about resilience and the power of believing in your dreams.

In History, we had the opportunity to see and hold an inactive WW1 rifle. The children were taught about the process of manufacturing and why it proved to be so popular; an impressive 17 million Lea-Enfield rifles made during WW1 and II.

Autumn Week 3

A huge congratulations to Conor for receiving the headteacher's award this week for his though provoking questioning during History.

In English this week, we have begun our flashback narrative which focuses on a WW1 flashback. The class have been using their knowledge from our history lessons to fuel their creativity with their writing.

In science, we have been looking at the circulatory system. This lesson involved the children going on the journey of a red blood cell which we recreated on the playground using chalk.

Autumn Week 2

A huge congratulations to Phyllis for receiving the Headteacher's award for being an amazing role model for Y6!

In science this week, we have been learning about the components of blood. We explored this by creating our own blood sample including; plasma, red blood cells, white blood cells and platelets.

Challenge - can you complete this cloze procedure which details the function of the 4 components of blood?

___________ is a mixture of different types of  __________ suspended in a yellow coloured liquid called ____________.

The main function of blood is to: carry ___________ and nutrients to the body’s cells; remove _____________ products; and protect the body against ______________.

Autumn Week 1

A great first week in Falcon Class! A huge congratulations to Christopher for being awarded the headteacher's award for his positive attitude to learning.

This week we have started our Pop Art unit, the class have really enjoyed this and showed great resilience with their painting. We have also been inspired by a fellow student from Kite Class to do our own bouncy egg experiment - we will be looking forward to the results on Monday. In Maths, we have been measuring the circumference of our heads, the length of our hands, feet and height. We will be remeasuring in July 2025 to see how much we have grown.
